From Franklin High to Howard University: My Journey to an HBCU

By Chukundi Salisbury Jr., class of 2024

When I walked the halls of Franklin High School, I dreamed of a college experience that would challenge me, inspire me, and surround me with a community that looked like me, uplifted me, and pushed me to be my best. That dream led me to Howard University—one of the most prestigious Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the country.

Attending Howard has been more than just an academic experience; it’s been a journey of self-discovery, growth, and empowerment. From day one, I was welcomed into a culture that celebrates Black excellence in all its forms. Whether in the classroom, at student-led events, or in everyday conversations, there’s a shared understanding that we are here to build a legacy, to be leaders, and to uplift one another.

Howard has challenged me academically and broadened my perspective on what it means to be a student of color in fields where we are often underrepresented. Whether it’s tackling complex calculus problems, conducting experiments in chemistry labs, or diving into programming, I’ve found a deep sense of purpose in my studies. More importantly, I’ve been surrounded by professors and mentors who are invested in my success—who see my potential even when I doubt myself.

To any Franklin High student who sees themselves at an HBCU, know that you are capable, worthy, and ready for this journey. Choosing an HBCU is more than just picking a school; it’s embracing a legacy of excellence, resilience, and culture. If you’re looking for a place where you’ll be challenged, supported, and celebrated all at once, an HBCU might be the perfect place for you. Keep striving, keep believing in yourself, and never be afraid to dream big. The world needs your talent, your ambition, and your unique perspective. And who knows? Maybe one day, I’ll see you on The Yard at Howard!

HU, YOU KNOW!!
